Mason Square Farmers’ Market starts its sixth season this summer

The Concerned Citizens of Mason Square Farmers’ Market begins its sixth season on Saturday July 7 at 11 Wilbraham Rd. on the corner of Eastern Ave. next to State St. at the Baystate Mason Square Neighborhood Health Center.  Please join us every Saturday from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. to experience the sights, smells and tastes of summer.  Every week the market is a gathering place for the community and people of all ages, and the market wouldn’t be the same without the kids; it is a family event.  Often there is music at the market along with community organizations and special activities like cooking demonstrations.  It is important to make it out and continue to support this effort, the local farmers and the other community organizations that set up to offer services.  This year the Wholesome Wave Foundation will be providing money to double SNAP (food stamps) up to 10 dollars a week; that means if you spend ten dollars you get an extra ten to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables!  The market also accepts WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Coupons.

It’s all about the tomatoes!

Tomatoes are in season!
Great new reciepe for dinner that includes tomatoes
Tomato and Garlic Pasta
3 ripe tomatoes
3 cloves garlic
1 small bunch of basil or parsley
1/2 cup fruity extra virgin olive oil
3/4 lb pasta
salt and pepper

Cut out the stem ends and dice tomatoes. Peel and chop the garlic and chop the leaves of parsley or basil. Have all of these ingredients prepared and ready by the stove. Put pasta on to cook in rapididly boiling salted water. Heat the olive oil in a heavy bottomed skillet until quite hot but not smoking. Throw the garlic into the oil. Right away, before the garlic starts to brown, add the tomatoes and stir. They will propbably splatter a little. Add parsley or basil and cook just a minute or two, until the tomatoes are warmed through and have started to relax. Season to taste with salt and peper and toss and serve with cooked pasta.

Come on Saturday’s and meet the youth from Gardening the Community(GTC) as they ride in on their bikes with their fresh locally grown veggies.

This week the GTC will be hosting a Community Cookout on Wednesday August 17th from 5:30 to 8 pm at 256 Handcock St. Springfield, MA

Join GTC for food, live music, and conversation in celebration of their hard work so far this summer! It’s a potluck style, so they are encouraging you to bring a dish, especially if it has vegetables!

This year the “Friendly Market on the Hill” as increased the number of farmers at the market.  This year the farmers are from Gardening the Community, Pioneer Valley Growers Co-op, Green Acres, Nuestras Raices, Roots, Fruits & Greens, New Lands Farm of LSS, New Growth Gardens, Allah Gold, and Johnson Family Farm.

Come and meet the farmers as you shop for your weeks worth of fresh fruits and veggies!
